Introducing Asha…

To complete our series of introductions to the NBA directors we present Asha…

Singing, poetry and music are a few of Asha’s passions and her idea of a good night is strum away on one of her many guitars and have a good old sing song. Asha loves to write and was first published at the age of 15 by Penguin Press.

Asha has a BA Hons Multimedia Communications and Culture which underpins her work with communities and families which she has been doing for the last ten years in Nottingham and the West Midlands. Through her work Asha assists people from disadvantaged communities by creating holistic community projects.

Asha doesn’t have a favourite food per se as she likes to eat mostly everything. Jollof rice, prawn lasagne, cakes and pastries she loves them all. There are however only a few things she doesn’t like and when she finds out what they are she’ll let you know.

One of the highlights of Asha’s life so far was her visit to Ghana in 2001 where she attended a school and studied with some young women. It was a life changing and humbling experience which she still remembers like it was yesterday.

A good scrounge around charity shop is a something Asha takes quite seriously. She searches for all sorts of odds and ends but in particular buttons which she uses to “jazz up” clothes and also makes brooches and hair clips.

Third Member of the NBA Team…

Our third member to be featured is Laura Summers, here are seven interesting fact about Laura…

Laura never had a day off school in 11 years. The Lord Mayor even drove her to Manning Comprehensive on her last day where the whole school came out to greet her.

Laura worked in museum for 8 ½ years, she studied history and heritage in her undergraduate, and Museums and Heritage Management in her Postgraduate MA.

Laura is of mixed heritage, Jamaican/English, and is incredibly proud of both her backgrounds. She can do a mean roast dinner and a pretty fabulous mutton and rice!

Laura has problems with soggy food touching non soggy food. Beans on toast? No toast with beans!!

Laura gets very excited over stationary, weird I know but a trip to WH Smith really does it for her!

Laura recently discovered her great grandfather on her mother’s side, the Jamaican side, was a ginger haired Scotsman, and her family still owns land purchased by him back in the turn of the 19th Century.

Laura loves Judge Judy and aspires to be like her in her 70’s

Introducing The Nottingham Black Archive Team…

In our next series of blog entries you will be introduced to the NBA directors. First up is the multi talented word-smith Panya Banjoko…heres what she had to say for herself.

Panya Banjoko
Poet, Writer; NBA Director

1. I have approximately 82 dreadlocks on my head ranging from 6 inches to 49 inches long. The upside of this is I say I’m Bob Marley’s sister, when abroad, it usually gets me at least one free drink! The downside is it takes at least three days to dry when I wash them.

2. I was once told by a boyfriend that if I was two inches shorter I would have been a dwarf, needless to say the relationship didn’t last!

3. Which leads on to my least favourite number, it’s ‘35’. Why? Because that’s when I realised I really wasn’t ever going to grow anymore and I’d never make it to five foot tall.

4. I have a Nigerian surname and was born in Nottingham by Jamaican parents. This causes confusion when people try to put me in a box, because the English think I’m Jamaican, the Jamaicans say I’m English and the Nigerians can’t understand how a ‘Jamo’ has an African name.

5. My favourite food has to be plantain. I can eat them fried, boiled or even mashed in fritters, for me the world would be a cheerless place without sweet fried plantain in it.

6. I love to write and so far I have had my poetry published by Penguin Press and I have had two children’s stories published (Hari at the Castle and Bibi’s Museum Adventure).

7. I like all things creative which includes knitting, crocheting, writing, performing and visiting art galleries and museums and I’m always learning new things (I recently taught myself to rag rug).
